As the curtains close on another year, I find myself reflecting on the incredible live music experiences that have enriched my 2023. Thanks to my job at HMV, not only have I been able to delve deep into the world of music retail but I've also had the privilege of meeting some talented local bands through the HMV Live and Local Initiative. From intimate venues to grand festivals, here's a recap of my standout moments.
The Local Scene: Grassroots Music
Working at HMV has its perks, one of which is discovering hidden musical gems. Among the talented bands I encountered, Claw Wilson stands out. This 4 piece rock band from our local scene had an electrifying stage presence and unmistakable talent. The HMV Live and Local platform has been instrumental in providing emerging artists, including students from nearby schools, with the exposure they deserve.
Nestled in Guildford, The Boileroom has become one of my go-to venues for discovering emerging talent. This year, I had the pleasure of witnessing enjoyable performances by Sterling Press, Saloon Dion, and local alt-rock group Innsbruck. Each band brought something unique to the table, reaffirming my belief in the power of grassroots music.
Reading Festival
Seeing artists I've admired for years perform live was nothing short of magical. Arlo Parks' soulful melodies, the infectious beats of Girls Don't Sync, and the poetic genius of Loyle Carner were just a few highlights. And let's not forget the iconic performance by The Killers that had everyone singing along.
But sometimes, the most memorable experiences come from unexpected discoveries. Case in point: stumbling upon High Vis, a post-hardcore punk band, on the Festival Republic stage. Their raw energy and captivating stage presence left a lasting impression, making them one of my favorite finds of the festival.
Halloween with Inhaler
What better way to celebrate Halloween than with a live performance by Inhaler? After discovering them earlier this year at Reading Festival, I was thrilled to see them take the stage once again in Camden. The crowd was buzzing with energy, and the band members themselves got into the spirit, donning costumes that added to the festive atmosphere.
All-Time Favourites: Bakar and Cosmo Pyke
Last but certainly not least, 2023 blessed me with the opportunity to see two of my all-time favorite artists live: indie-rock sensation Bakar and the incredibly talented Cosmo Pyke. Both artists released new albums/EPs this year, and witnessing their songs come to life on stage was extremely special. On top of that, Alice Auer and her bandmates delivered a mesmerizing opening set for Cosmo Pyke - she is definitely an artist to keep an eye on!
Whether it’s discovering local talent through HMV Live and Local or witnessing iconic artists at festivals , 2023 has been a year filled with unforgettable music. Here’s to another year!
